What we do

What we do

Guided by its mission to empower children through education and uplift youth and women through skills, support and opportunity, the foundation has grown into a vibrant community pillar. Founded in 2013, Ms. Calvin Masika, a former nurse who witnessed firsthand the suffering of children affected by conflict along the DRC–Uganda border opened a small school in the Kirembe hillside of Kasese welcoming 35 refugee and vulnerable Ugandan children determined to offer them a better future. Today, Worth A Haven School provides quality education to more than 380 children from kindergarten to Primary Seven. Many early beneficiaries are now in secondary school and are supported through scholarships and hosted by local families. The school also operates two dormitories housing 45 boys and girls cared for by dedicated staff ensuring safety, stability and holistic development.

Beyond education, Worth A Haven advances economic empowerment for women and youth through banana farming, beans and maize farming, coffee farming, beekeeping as well as mobile training hubs offering tailoring, basket weaving, and financial literacy. The foundation equips families with the skills and income needed to support their households and keep children in school. These initiatives create sustainable livelihoods and strengthen community resilience.Worth A Haven continues to grow as a place of opportunity, dignity and hope where education and skills empower communities to build brighter futures.

our story

Worth a Haven traces its roots to the visionary dream of Masika, a dedicated nurse who volunteered along the challenging border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo—a region often referred to as the cursed border.
During her volunteer years at Bwera Hospital, Masika witnessed the devastating impact of perpetual war, with families losing loved ones and seeking refuge in neighboring Uganda. Among the refugees were numerous orphaned children, deprived of both parents and compelled to cross the border in search of a better future.
In response to this heartbreaking reality, Masika took some of these children under her wing, bringing them to her family's home. However, the financial constraints proved challenging, prompting Masika to seek additional resources. Through resourcefulness, she managed to rent fields, cultivating local produce and raising a few animals, achieving minimal self-sufficiency for her small growing family.
Word spread, and with the generosity and altruism of humans who came from far lands, Masika secured a larger house to continue her noble undertaking—rescuing more and more orphan children from a condemned future.
Nevertheless, Masika is conscious of the fact that her children are not the only ones to be lacking the fundamental right to a school education. By being in touch with local realities, she understands that many families in the Kasese community are unable to pay their children's school fees. As the foundation recognises education as an irreplaceable human right, they began to devote every energy and financial aid received into building a school that could be accessible to the most fragile people and provide an excellent level of education in a safe space where every child feels comfortable and welcome.

In 2022, this vision materialized with the establishment of the Preschool and Primary School Worth a Haven. Here, more than 250 students enjoy the basic right of a school education. The school wants to enable its children, not only to grow in knowledge awareness but to grow free in their own expression, promoting an education that fosters creativity and enables a healthy and secure future.

Over the years, our foundation has undertaken various impactful projects, each contributing to the establishment of a resilient core within our community. In 2020, we embarked on a solidarity project, inspired by our cherished partners at Hopeworth Children Italia. This initiative resulted in the planting of over 240 trees on the Worth A Haven Land, symbolizing our commitment to environmental stewardship. During the same year, we launched the Worth Growing Food project, a dynamic endeavor aimed at fostering both small and large-scale food cultivation. This initiative harnesses the collective buying power and skills within our community, seeking to reshape the prevailing food and farming systems. Our goal is to provide people with an ethically driven alternative to the current, often damaging, food system.
In 2021, we initiated the Piggery, Farming and Rice project, designed to create a sustainable food production process within the orphanage. Through the sale of meat, maize and rise we raise funds to support the secondary school education of the children. This dual-purpose approach not only ensures a sustainable source of nutrition but also facilitates access to education for our growing family.
Building on our commitment to holistic empowerment, in 2022, alongside the establishment of the Worth a Haven Nursery and Primary School, we introduced the Women Empowerment Project. This initiative empowers more women in our community to engage in income-generating activities, fostering economic independence and creating a ripple effect of positive change. Each project represents a step forward in our mission to make a lasting impact on the lives we touch.
